Haunted House Cake Tutorial – Part One
In this blog post and video tutorial,
I will be sharing how I created the Spooky Chocolate Trees for my husband’s Haunted House Sculpted Birthday Cake.
And since they were made with DARK CHOCOLATE, they were a BIG hit at the party!
Well, let’s get started…
Here is a list of the things you will need:
Tools and Supplies
- Dark Chocolate or Candy Melts
- Piping Bag or Parchment
- Scissors
- Large Board
- Printed Templates of Trees
- Wax Paper
- Lollipop Sticks (for support – cut to size if needed)
If you click any of these links and make a purchase, I will get a small percentage of the purchase price for being an Amazon Affiliate – so Thank You! 🙂
Easy Instructions
In addition to the video tutorial, here are the written instructions. 🙂
- Download and Print spooky tree templates on paper (see TEMPLATE #4 below)
- Place templates on a board (anything that will NOT bend – I used a large cutting board)
- Cover templates with wax paper
- Melt chocolate in piping bag
- Use scissors to cut the tip of the piping bag – START OUT VERY SMALL – you can make it bigger, but you can’t make it smaller 😜
- Line up where your lollipop stick will be and trim if necessary
- Pipe chocolate, place the lollipop stick, and cover with more chocolate
- Pipe some spooky branches
- Place entire board in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes
- Peel gently from wax paper
- Adhere to cake board with small amount of melted chocolate
I know what you are going to ask next… “YIKES!!! What if they break?!?!?!?” 😱
No worries!!! Don’t you know that chocolate fixes EVERYTHING!?!?!?! 😜
Seriously though… They can be slightly fragile, but all you have to do is glue them back together with a little more chocolate. 🙂
Bet you couldn’t even tell that one of my trees broke in two places. A little more chocolate to glue it back together and you couldn’t even tell!
Of course, you can always make extras and eat the broken evidence LOL 😉
Templates Available for Download
Cake Structure:
- I started with two 8″ round chocolate cakes (see red circle shown in templates).
- After stacking and filling them with dark chocolate ganache, I applied Template #1 and trimmed the outside edges to match the shape.
- Then I cut the horizontal roof line so I could add a support board.
- Each section (above roof line and below roof line) was cut into two horizontal layers and filled with more dark chocolate ganache.
- Four short straws were inserted in the main section to support the roof section.

Door and Windows:
NOTE: The two side windows were duplicates of the smallest front window.
